A new project, with a new camera…
I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about this. A new project with a new camera with new settings and a lens that is bigger than one of my old and trusted M camera bodies. I was hesitant to walk around with it in the streets, imagining everybody looking at me. Doubtful to take an up, close and personal portrait as I had visions of making people feel uncomfortable. Besides those doubts obviously playing in my head, a real ‘disadvantage’ was my photo-bag being about twice as heavy as normal.
So here we are… I’m just a couple of days in. Do I regret having spent my savings on this new baby? I honestly can say no to that! All doubts described above - except for the heavy lifting - were indeed only in my head. Specially in this project, my subjects actually often love the camera. After three days my colleague Peter and I already made it to Argentinian TV and I’m nearing the point where, at least during the day, I’m walking the streets as comfortable as I do with the M.
On a technical note; the auto focus is a liberation more often than I had anticipated and I’m absolutely loving the fact that I can go into a nightclub kind of setting and not worry about shooting at ISO 3200 up to even 12500. Still freezing, sometimes erratic, movement. And those are just the first babystep discoveries in the past 48 hours. This morning during breakfast, I actually started reading the manual that I brought with me. There is so much functionality in this beast that I still have to explore…
For now, the beginning of our project turned out to have a flying start. And the SL2S is already delivering. Can’t wait to find out what more it will do for me.
